Licensing – Introduction

Alpine Canada and the ACA-CSC require coaches who are actively coaching in the current season, to complete annual professional development to maintain annual "Licensed" status.

The purpose of the program is:

  • to promote continuous improvement and life-long learning for coaches
  • to help reduce the risk of accidents
  • to promote coaching excellence at every level in the Canadian development system
  • to help professionalize ski coaching

Summary - Licensing Requirements

"Licensed" status is only required for those who are actively coaching in the current season.

Below is a summary of the licensing program details:

  • Active coaches must be licensed annually by the ACA-CSC.
  • Achieving "Licensed" status is the responsibility of the coach.
  • The annual license cycle is August 1 – July 31.
  • If enough credits have not been accumulated by July 31 for the upcoming cycle, coaches may continue accumulating credits for the new cycle until “licensed” status has been - achieved.
  • Coaches should be licensed before starting to coach athletes, supervise other coaches or implement programs.
  • The deadline date to be “licensed” is January 31 annually. This accommodates coaches working in all contexts.
  • If active coaches are not "Licensed" by January 31, they lose “member in good standing” status with the ACA-CSC.
  • 1 ED credit = half a day on snow or indoors on relevant topics.
  • 1 RM credit = a minimum of 1 hour of ski racing specific risk management content.
  • Clubs, regions and provincial organizations can deliver professional development that counts for licensing credits.

For complete details on the coach licensing program, see ACA-CSC Coach License policy.

You can also check a list of courses, seminars and workshops that qualify for licensing credits.

Tracking Professional Development Credits

Every club and/or region should be offering its coaches professional development opportunities at the beginning of the season and/or throughout the season. ACA-CSC tracks annual professional development activity in personal records for each member in the ACA-CSC membership database.

Professional Development Hosted by ACA-CSC Partner Organizations

Professional development events can be hosted by clubs, regions, Provincial Sport Organizations (PSO), ACA-CSC, Alpine Canada National Team or the CSIA as an ACA-CSC partner organizations within the skiing community. ACA-CSC provides an on-line management tool that assigns professional development credits to individual coach records. Professional development events are assigned education (ED) and risk management (RM) credits by ACA-CSC depending on content and duration of the event.
It is the responsibility of the event host (partner organization) to manage the process of posting and managing professional development events. This is accomplished by using the Licensing feature in the Partner Services section of this web site. Partner organizations (event hosts) are provided with a permanent log in account by ACA-CSC to on-line Partner Services.
For more information on acquiring a Partner Services log in account or to get log in details that you may have forgotten, .
Every club should have a Partner Services account.

Professional Development Hosted by Outside Agencies

To track credits for professional development provided by outside agencies, coaches must provide ACA-CSC with proof of attendance and completion of the event. The event must be relevant ski coaching professional development. ACA-CSC will determine whether the activity qualifies for licensing credit and assign activities appropriate credits. ACA-CSC will then credit the coach personal record in the database.
